Cynthia Rohrer
San Francisco, California
Cynthia Rohrer is a studio jeweler in San Francisco, CA, where she is also a garden and landscape designer. Her strong sense of design and a graphic aesthetic are employed her representations of silhouettes, pattern, and line. She works primarily in sterling and gold, at times with the addition of steel, rubber, paper, porcelain, or thread.
Of her work, Cynthia writes:
The collection of silhouettes I explore in my jewelry evolves constantly, as I fabricate each piece individually. My representations are achieved through piercing and chasing sheet silver, or by fabricating frames to form an outline. In much of my work, small groupings of simple shapes develop into more complex decorative patterns.
My starting point for designs in the past has come from many disparate sources: the security gates common on the front doors in my neighborhood, the shadows of plants in my California garden, or even the bouncy outline of a hand-drawn cloud. While my individual forms have volume and curves, they maintain a certain flat, graphic or cartoonish essence. This aesthetic reflects the lighthearted forces behind my work.
