Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

Shane Darwent recently completed the Core Fellowship at Penland School of Crafts.  Prior to this residency, Shane lived and worked in Brooklyn, NY.  He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryland College Institute of Art. Shane works primarily in photography, especially interested in alternative darkroom processes.

Of his work, Shane writes:

Still young and forever expanding, the story of this nation is one of continual change.  The physical remnants of this change intrigue me.  Hillsides are exposed through mining and structures rendered useless through contemporary improvements.  With no given context one is left to their own imagination when pondering why these things are the way they are and how much longer they will remain in that state.  The camera allows me to capture these poignant scenes and recall their abundant possibilities of metaphor for where we have been and where we are heading. These creations speak to me as if they were epic sculptures made by divine and ironic craftsmen. The light and color within these scenes make these works of art come alive.  With a passionate curiosity I explore the world around me.  With my camera, I document it.
