DAVE PARKER A graphic designer for twenty years, David Matthew Parker has dipped his foot into the world of fine art. He is a member of Visual Art Exchange and has participated in several juried and non-juried shows there. He also exhibits his work online via flickr.com and Imagekind.com.

These pieces are part of a series I call “Logoglyphs,” for which I created an abstract symbol for each letter of the alphabet, and then generated compositions by creating “words” from these symbols. For these pieces I chose a nine-letter word and then arranged the accompanying symbols in such a way as to create a 3x3 design. I found inspiration in the length of the word and also its independent meaning, and I drew on both to create the composition, select colors, and adjust other elements.

JEREMY PURSER is a junior studying graphic design at the College of Design at North Carolina State University. He previously studied printmaking at the University of North Carolina at Chapel and abroad at the Glasgow School of Art. His interests include Boston Terriers, Polish paper craft, cooking, blank verse, thrifted postcards, and Takoma Records revivalism. His work can be found athttp://www.beardenvy.us/.

The images (with the exception of one) are a combination of self-inititiated studies and process work completed during the Summer of 2009 to explore form, color, and texture for the commission of album artwork by friend and musician Hi Ho Silver Oh.  October 17's image, "The Ringleader Shopping" is from a separate project entitled "the sentence game" in which Jeremy Purser and Emily Millette (http://emilyem.com/) exchange sentences (topical, absurd, pun, ungrammatical, etc.) and illustrate them. The sentence for this particular image was "The circus performers always found it impossible to behave like the other grocery shoppers."

ELIZA CAMPBELL KISER A childhood obsession with drawing led me to study illustration and fibers at NCSU's College of Design.  I graduated with a Bachelor's in Art and Design in 2004. Characters are always the most interesting part of any story to me, and I try to both create them and begin to tell their stories in my work -- hoping that one day they will take on a life of their own.

I believe that everybody wants to be someone other than who they are, no matter what they tell you.

We all tell stories about ourselves and who we are, and all of our stories change depending on the audience and what we think they want to hear.  I am fascinated by the parts of the story you never hear.  I am fascinated by the parts of people that stay hidden, for whatever reason.  I am fascinated by the lengths we are willing to go to to cover up the parts of ourselves we don’t want other people to see.  In my work, I try to use the whimsical vocabulary of fables, dreams, and fairytales to tell stories about all parts of people – especially the parts that we normally hide.
