Rebus Works is pleased to present: Head in the Clouds. This exhibition, which opens on August 1st with a First Friday reception from 6-10 p.m., features the work of Cynthia Rohrer and Thu Tran. The exhibition will remain on view through September 27th. The exhibition features jewelry by Rohrer and soft sculptures by Tran.

Thu Tran and Cynthia Rohrer met washing dishes in 2003 and have been sending each other hand-crafted artwork ever since, even seeing each other in person every few years for good measure. They are on a quest to produce the cutest, roundest, and most happy jewelry, drawings, and sculpture on the planet, and they do so with reckless abandon. They share a love for making things with their hands, often in large batches of variables and multiples. While Tran is currently constructing landscapes in the living room of her Brooklyn apartment, Rohrer prefers to do so in the front yard of her San Francisco cottage. They are pleased to present their contemporary work, together for the first time, in Head in the Clouds.

Cynthia Rohrer is a studio jeweler in San Francisco, CA, where she is also a garden and landscape designer. Her strong sense of design and a graphic aesthetic are employed her representations of silhouettes, pattern, and line. She works primarily in sterling and gold, at times with the addition of steel, rubber, paper, porcelain, or thread. This collection presents a continued exploration of silhouette, informed by the metal security gates on front doors in Rohrer's neighborhood, the shadows of plants in her garden, and, the outline of a hand-drawn cloud.

Rohrer holds a Bachelors of Arts in Latin American Studies from the University of California at Berkeley and completed the Core Program at Penland School of Crafts. She has exhibited extensively in California, and her work has been featured in Metalsmith magazine (2006, Exhibition in Print).

Thu Tran currently lives in Brooklyn, NY where she is constantly engaged in various independent projects that often involve video, sculpture, drawing, and food. She also works and teaches in various studios around the city with glassblowers and artists. For Head in the Clouds, Tran presents soft sculptural landscapes constructed of a variety of fabrics, plastic toys, and polyester stuffing. Tran's vividly colored landscapes are playful and fantastical, evoking a sort of cartoonish dreamland.

Tran holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Glass from the Cleveland Institute of Art, with an emphasis on Sculpture, Drawing, and Video. She has also completed several workshops at Penland School of Crafts. Tran has exhibited through the Midwest and in New York, and is the host and creator of Food Party, a (would-be) TV cooking show that appears online at thutranthutran.wordpress.com.
