Rebus Works is pleased to announce Structure + Color by Abie Harris. The exhibition opens April 4, with a First Friday reception from 6-10pm.
Featuring pastel drawings, Structure + Color is a collection of new works by Abie Harris, a Raleigh artist and architect. Each vibrant drawing is the synthesis of Harris’ recent work—a combination of architectural plan drawing and gestural studies of buildings and other structures. The result is fresh, communicating in Harris’ language structures built and un-built, with lines and details real and imagined.
Divided into four distinct sections, the exhibitions spans distinct areas of Harris' interests. The first section features large campus planning drawings, of North Carolina State University and Penland School of Crafts. The second section of the exhibition is grouping of a variety of studies-- downtown Raleigh, the Spring Hill Precinct, and campus courtyards. Section three is comprised of a series of abstract color field drawings inspired by Globe Road in western North Carolina. These drawings communicate sky, mid-ground, and foreground, denoted through Harris' deft use of color and composition. The final grouping features what Harris calls Townscapes, drawings that incorporate both Abie's interest and skill in drafting and abstraction.
Harris graduated from North Carolina State University and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He has taught in the College of Design at NCSU, and was the University Architect at NCSU for thirty-two years prior to his recent retirement. He was made a fellow in the American Institute of Architects for his work in campus planning, and is part of the Board of Trustees at Penland School of Crafts. His architectural drawings are part of the D.H. Hill Library’s Special Collections. Harris has exhibited at the Miriam Block Gallery and at Zely & Ritz.
