Via Penland is a collection of work by artists connected to Penland School of Crafts. They have, in recent years, been students, scholarship recipients, teaching assistants, core students, resident artists or instructors. Artists selected work in a variety of mediums taught at Penland including iron, metals, glass, books, print, drawing, wood, clay, fibers, and paper. The show will feature 13 artists on our gallery wall, as well as new work for our Storefront.

Rebus Works is honored to feature works by Vivian Beer, metal sculpture; Jenny Mendes, clay; Cynthia Rohrer, jewelry; Marc Maiorana, iron; Sylvie Rosenthal, wood; Jon Shearin, iron; Greg Fidler, glass; Sarah Loertscher, print; Robyn Raines, books; Aran Galligan, fibers; Amy Jacobs, paper; Marilyn Brogan, ink drawing.

Penland School of Crafts, founded in 1929, is located north of Asheville in Penland, NC. Originally founded to train women in the craft of weaving, the school is now a national center for craft education, with fourteen different studios, and students from around the world. Instructors teach both experienced craftspeople and novices for sessions that range from one and two-week summer sessions to two month Concentrations. The school also has the Core Program, a two-year work-study program, as well as a 3-year artist-in-residency program. The studios at Penland include fibers, books and paper, wood, iron, metals, clay, glass, and printmaking. Penland's campus is a mix of historic buildings and contemporary structures (the new wood studio opened this summer). The area surrounding Penland claims two hundred working artists and craftsmen. Time spent at Penland is often thought of as life-changing, and the intense experience of learning with other makers is unmatched.

Rebus Works is also participating in the Boylan ArtWalk, on Sunday, December 3rd, from 1-5pm. In addition to the Via Penland show, several artists will have booths outside, including Raleigh artist Eddie Taylor, and Greensboro artist Leanne Pizio and Winston-Salem's Tiffany O'Brien.
